In the early 1900's, Denver businessman and tournament caster Goodwin Granger set out to build a fly rod that was affordable to the avid fly fisherman, yet had the finest casting characteristics of any rod made. Little did he know that he created a legend. To this day, Granger bamboo rods are sought by fly fisherman around the world for casting quality. However, on or about 1955, because of the introduction of various new rod building materials, production of Granger bamboo rods stopped. Eventually Wright & McGill ended up with the remaining assets.
Through an exclusive agreement, Wright & McGill has authorized Lacey & Johnson to build Granger bamboo rod once again. As it was in the past, it is now again — the finest casting rod on the market with the best appointments and finish for the money. A rod with a long pedigree and one of the best split cane rod values you can own.
Our tapers are based on Goodwin Granger’s rods and Wright & McGill rods that we have tested and documented. You may specify an original taper, or request a Wright & McGill taper.
Original Granger blanks were assembled with hide glue and had reel seats made of thin nickel silver. Our new Granger blanks are still made from the highest quality Chinese Tonkin bamboo that has been dried and hardened, split into strips, precision planed, and finally glued with URAC 185, which is more resistant to water and mildew than hide glue, yet it retains the casting characteristics of hide glue. The beautiful color of the pre 1955 Grangers was done with ammonia vapor. So are the new ones.
Features include:
- Best quality bamboo
- Hand made and engraved nickel silver reel seat (much heavier gauge than original)
- Original silk thread wrap colors and patterns
- Hardened steel guides
- Optional agate and “agateen” stripping guides (on models Favorite and above)
- Multiple layers of marine grade spar varnish finish
